developing this noon, there is a major break in the search for a christmas eve killer. philadelphia police have a person of interest in custody for the murder of a 81 year old grandmother and store owner. charges are pending against that person of interest as family members prepare to lay the victim to rest.

good afternoon, i'm jim donovan. >> i'm jan carabeo. greg argos live outside of the south philadelphia grocery store, where the shooting happened with the latest developments. greg? >> reporter: jan, you said it, this is very big development in this murder investigation, case once again on christmas eve, 81 year old marie buck, who owns this south philly towards -- shore, she was gunned down inside. now police tell us 31 year old male in custody, person of interest, as detectives with the homicide unit are meeting with the district attorney's office, to finalize those charges. >> it is mind-boggling to me, i can't understand what would make an individual resort to that level of violence. it is just absolutely ridiculous. it is down right evil when you any it. >> philadelphia police commissioner, richard ross, showing his absolute disgust over the killing of 81 year old marie buck. >> at some point in time you knew who you were firing at. you knew who was in that store. and so it just is, to me, just

pure evil to do something like that. >> on christmas eve, detectives say a man walked into marie's grocery at the corner of sixth street around tighten in south philly, and shot the elderly woman multiple times in the chest. nothing was stolen in the store at the time. now, as a memorial to buck, and her family -- >> marie will be remembered as a staple in this community. she is a woman who has raised three generations of children, she is a woman who was kinds to everyone she met, didn't matter who you were. >> homicide detectives are meeting with the district attorney's office, and charges against the person of interest are pending. >> once again, back here live, you can see that growing memorial in front of the store she has owned for such a long time. pending charges are pending right now. clark with the homicide division tells us they'll hold press conference later this afternoon as soon as charges are finalized, and we'll of course be there, provide you the latest on this murder

investigation as soon as we get it. for now live in south philadelphia, i'm greg argos, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". craig, thank you. turning now to weather. some early morning snow moved across the northern portions of a region this morning. cbs-3 cameras caught this snowy scene in jim thorpe carbon county. several communities in the poconos and lehigh valley saw snow today too. but mostly rain fell around the philadelphia area. it was a wet scene in rittenhouse square where umbrellas were up. now that rain is starting to move out. next up: gusty winds and colder temperatures. meteorologist, katie fehlinger, is tracking all of the above in the cbs-3 weather center. just mixed bag? >> pretty much. one of those proverbial kitchen sink forecasts. back edge to the precipitation, so that's helpful. but reminding me of like something out of it is a wonderful life up at jim thorpe this morning, such beautiful scene up that way. we did end up with not so much

impressive but enough to speak of. strait berg picked up even 2 inches as of last check, saylorsburg, 1.2, and inch in toby hanna and jim thorpe. .3 inches of snow before it turned over to rain. here's where we currently stands, nice back edge to the rain and the snow for that matter. but notice, it is still just snow. that is falling in carbon and monroe counties. while it has turned over to rain, even that is starting to taper off across the rest of the region, do still have winter weather advisory until 4:00 this afternoon, including carbon, monroe count counties, headed up toward the i80 interchange, pair of four's, current temperature outside philadelphia international airport at this hour. we are into the upper 40's, out in atlantic city, as well, colder compare comparison, but has warmed up enough it hence the snow and ice turn over to rain. up in the mountains, don't expect to rebounds out of the 30's, although again, thankfully, all of this mess is clearing out of here. and then, we have to turn our focus to the cold and the

wind, that waits in the wings behind this. much more on that just a little later in the show, jim? >> thanks, katie. well the tributes continue to pour in for hollywood legend, debbie reynolds. reynolds died yesterday at the age of 84 just one day after the death of her daughter, actress and author, carrie fisher. fans left flowers and messages of condolances on reynolds' star on the hollywood walk of fame this morning. correspondent chris martinez takes a look back at her life and career. >> ♪ >> ♪ >> debbie reynolds was just 19 years old, when she lands add leading role in the iconic 1952 film singing in the rain. opposite gene kelly. singing and dancing ebola i became america's sweetheart, shooting into stardom on the silver screen. >> ♪ >> reynolds appeared in many movie musicals during the 1950's. had earned academy award nomination for her title role in the molly brown.

was born marry train cyst reynolds in el paso, texas on april 1st, 1932. her family moved to burbank, california where a miss burbank beauty contest crown led to a movie studio contract, and a new stage name. debbie reynolds. >> ♪ >> and 23 years old, reynolds found hollywood romance, with singer eddie fisher. >> radient bride and handsome groom. debbie and educationally finally mr. and mrs.-- >> the couple had two children together, including actress, carrie fisher. but their star studded marriage ended in scandal, when fisher left reynolds for her best friends, actress elizabeth taylor. reynolds later revealed she and taylor eventually made up. >> she was just as dumb as i was. so lies. >> reynolds continued to search for love, marrying and divorcing twice more. >> well, my personal life is always sort of like this, i think i can, i think i can, i

think i can. i have no taste in men. >> she later became fixture in las vegas, opening her own hotel and casino where she often performed live. reynolds was also a notable collector of film memorabilia, emmaus g thousands of prompts and costumes, including many iconic hollywood dresses. the collection grew bigger than she ever intended. >> it was always too much. life should be that. >> debbie reynolds was 84 years old. chris martinez, cbs news, los angeles. life well lived. well, during her career, reynolds was nominated for more than dozen awards including golden globe's, and emmy and as car. >> two countries on opposite side of syria have brokered sees war to end the fighting. turkey and refresh have come to an agreement that would expands the cease-fire in aleppo in other parts of syria. deal excludes isis and the kurdish malitia that turkey considers a terrorist organization. the cease-fire is scheduled to

go into effect at midnight. in other news this noon: president-elect donald trump is touting promises to by two countries to bring 8,000 jobs to the u.s., proof he's delivering on campaign promises. turns out the new jobs are actually old news. giuliana goldman with the latest from washington. >> i was just called by the head people at sprint, as they're going to be bringing 5,000 jobs back to the united state, to take it from other countries. >> wednesday, mr. trump took a moment about not one but two companies looking to add to the job market. >> also one web, new company, will be hiring 3,000 people so that's very exciting. >> just few hours later he faced questions regarding whether this job announcement was new news at all. >> 5,000 jobs that you announced today were part of the 50,000 -- >> you know, i just spoke with the head president. he said because of me, they're doing 5,000 jobs in this country. >> i just want to thank you. >> thank you.

>> earlier this month, mr. trump touted a deal with the ceo of soft bank, japanese telecommunications and internet company that owns france, and is the largest share holder of one web. the agreement to invest ooh billion dollars and bring 50,000 jobs to the u.s. >> we have confirmed these sprint jobs are part of that total number. >> harrison, editor at bloomberg. >> to some extent every president does there is they like to take credit for jobs brought to the country. but trump has this image as wheeler-dealer, guy who just thinks knows how to negotiate. >> told cbs news in a phonecall, that the 3,000 jobs reference dollars by trump is also part of that 50,000 promise from soft bank. his company also announced those jobs back on december 19th. while soft bang plans to bring tens of thousands of jobs to the u.s., were in the works before the election, yesterday's sprint said it is responsible for 5,000 of those jobs.

myra found last night, two left mays landing new jersey and headed south to north carolina for the holiday. former driver, for nj transit, briley made the drive many times before. a man who had seen news reports notified the police, when he saw her car. he took a pass, that goes further back in the woods, quite a ways. that's when he came across the vehicle. they were outside the vehicle, probably another 50 yards from the vehicle at a tree. there was apple, juice boxes, from apple, and some other items appear they probably had been eating and drinking several times during this time period. >> barbara was found unconscious, and taken to virginia hospital, both are now in stable condition, and recovering in the hospital with family members. >> certainly good news there. well, if you're afraid of heights, one bridge certainly not for you. the world's highest bridge is now open to traffic in china. the bridge is 200 stories tall. it connects two mountain us promises, nearly 2,000 feet

>> bloody out today, isn't it? >> sure didn't start off very well, did it, and still trying to get away from that. i don't think you are talking a lot of sunshine, but the winds and rain will wind down, that's helpful. people are enjoying the fact that we've got snow up at the ski slopes. that's where we start things off. beautiful shot here up at blue mountain, slopes are open, many of the slopes are open at this point. fine haze sort of settling in across the mountain top there. still regardless, very pretty shot to start things off here. little gloomy, as jan allude dollars to here. outside middle township high school. gray clouds, low cloud deck still very obvious, you have 47 degrees, so at least too mild for anything but plane rain here. yes, bit of dreary start to our thursday afternoon, right? well, this is a storm system that's going to be pulling away, not necessarily very

quickly, but it will be gone, come later this afternoon, this is actually a storm, too, rapidly intensifying as it rolls into new england, very likely produce about a foot of snow off that way. so, we really have a glancing blow there is rolls on through, trailing frontal boundery continuing to roll taught sea. in the wake of the cold fronts, a loft time you see the winds pick up. tonight we expect to see wind gusts peaking as high as 30, 35 miles per hour, tomorrow, a noticeably blustery day as well. because it is the winds that's generally out of the west, it is actually going to help kick in that lake enhancement, lake effect machine, which could even allow couple of flurries, oren grade snow showers to even survive as they cross our area. not talking about any additional snow accumulation, rather, enough of that snow to create a wintery atmosphere, so few flakes flying here and there, bigger story how cold it is, how blustery it will be tomorrow in the wake of the front. little break in the action come new years eve. we expect some sunshine, temperatures to rebounds back

to the 40's, come news years eve night, couple of fire work displays going on, and specking to possibly see a stray shower, as we ring in the new year here, but i don't think it is anything that you have to plan around, rather, don't be shocked if you may see couple every raindrops here and there, i think this will be more of non-event than anything. but i certainly did want to mention it to you, just in case. meantime, temperatures as they stand currently into the 40's, many locations, only at 36 currently in allentown, so we have seen the change-over from snow, to rain, say for the poconos. meanwhile, we talk little bit more about midnight, 2017. ushering in 2017 with chill in the air to say the least here, at 38 degrees in the sit. it will absolutely be colder as go out to some of the more outlying suburbs. please plan for that. pretty typical though for the standards this time of year. i think you expect it will be cold. then we should bottom out early this morning to about 34 degrees, overall call it partly sunny weekends as we had mentioned here, then looking ahead to next week, better chance for some rain comes along monday.
